Meditation by the numbers

Published by Soulpiphany. Last updated: November 2026

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, the share of U.S. adults who practiced meditation more than doubled between 2002 and 2022, from 7.5 to 17.3 percent.

This roundup in Guide Communication Lab, published by Soulpiphany, collects published statistics about meditation, the most common preparation people use when they try to connect with spirit guides. Every figure is attributed to its source. None of these are Soulpiphany's own numbers.

How many people meditate?

About 17.3 percent of U.S. adults practiced meditation in 2022, up from 7.5 percent in 2002, according to NCCIH. That growth means many people already have a basic settling practice they could use as a starting point for spirit guide communication.

Soulpiphany treats meditation as helpful but optional. These numbers describe how common meditation has become, not whether meditation produces contact with a guide.

What the safety number means

NCCIH reports that researchers concluded about 8 percent of participants had a negative effect from practicing meditation, which is similar to the percentage reported for psychological therapies. That is a useful reminder that meditation is a real practice with real effects, not a neutral ritual.

It is also why Guide Communication Lab recommends short sessions, stopping if you feel distressed, and speaking with a health care provider if you have a mental health condition. Spirit guide communication is not a substitute for professional care.

What these numbers do not measure

None of these statistics measure spirit guide communication, and none of them show that meditation produces contact with a guide. They measure how many people meditate and how often meditation has negative effects.

Common questions

Is meditation safe?

For most people it is considered safe, but not for everyone. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that researchers found about 8 percent of participants had a negative effect from practicing meditation, similar to the rate reported for psychological therapies. If you have a mental health condition, talk with your health care provider first.

What if I feel anxious during a spirit guide meditation?

Stop, open your eyes, and ground yourself in the room: feel your feet on the floor, name a few things you can see, and breathe normally. Nothing requires you to push through discomfort. Spirit guide communication is not a substitute for mental health care, so if distress persists or returns, contact a qualified professional.

Do I have to meditate to talk to my spirit guide?

No. Soulpiphany describes meditation as helpful but not required, and not a spiritual entrance exam. What matters is becoming present enough to notice what happens. Quiet breathing, sitting comfortably, a familiar grounding practice, or a calm walk can all serve that purpose. Use whatever settles you without making the setup more important than the conversation.

How long should a spirit guide meditation be?

There is no required length. Many people use five to fifteen minutes to settle before asking a question, and the sample session in the Spirit Guide Handbook fits within about fifteen minutes. For a sense of a structured format, each session of Soulpiphany's Call Your Guide Challenge runs about 30 to 45 minutes, across five days.

What is the best meditation to connect with spirit guides?

The best meditation to connect with spirit guides is one that settles you without scripting what you will see or hear. A short, quiet practice followed by a deliberate question works well for many people. Soulpiphany treats meditation as optional preparation; the real goal is a two-way exchange you can recognize, which its free guided experience is designed to help you reach.
